If you are anything like me then you know how mentally debilitating cleaning can be. With mild depression (which way too many people have) it’s insanely hard to get yourself to sort things out around you. Zero motivation, questions like “Why bother?” and the constant tiredness that overcomes you whenever you want to get up.

Yeah, you’re not alone. But I might have just found how you can still keep your surroundings clean while not overwhelming yourself.

The housewife rule

What is the Housewife rule?

I found the idea on Tumblr, where someone explained that when housewives were asked how they kept the home so clean, they said that “If something can be done in 2 minutes, I do it”. Seems obvious enough, right?

Unfortunately, many people disregard these small tasks. Instead, they focus on the bigger ones. Changing sheets, mopping up, cleaning the windows and all that. These aren’t necessarily big deals either, but they certainly need more time to do and a little more energy. And thus, we become paralized under the weight that we imagine is there even though it’s not all that bad.

But I get it.

Which is why I advise you to follow the Housewife rule. If something can be done in 2 minutes, just do it. It likely doesn’t take much energy and you will feel a little better afterwards.

What tasks can be done under 2 minutes?

I know, a lot of people can’t estimate how long some tasks can take. Fortunately, I can help you with that and I can give you a short list of things you can do to clean up a little.

  • Pick up a piece of trash and throw it out
  • Dust the top of a closet
  • Put away small items to their designated space (pens, makeup, clothes)
  • Wipe down counters
  • Sort out papers

Generally speaking, you should try to look at every task you need to do as invested time. If the time and the worth ratio is good (like in the case of every item on the list), you should try to do it as soon as possible.

Implement this whenever you can

If you still live at home, like me, you don’t have as many things to clean. Because of this, now is the time to get used to keeping things in order and to develop the habit of cleaning up around yourself. Once you move out, things will start to pile up. The laundry, the dishes, the trash. And trust me, you don’t want to struggle with getting used to cleaning when you already have your own place.

Either way, if you aren’t habitually cleaning up already, you should try to implement the Housewife rule whenever you can. At school, at home. Sort out the papers you have, throw out trash and organize what you have with you. It will pay off in the end.

  2. What a positive take on overcoming some debilitating depression. Everyone feels better if they can say they did something today even if it was just picking up a piece of trash. Lovely blog post.


    1. That’s exactly what I’m working on. Trying to do everything little by little, even if it takes weeks to clean up entirely.


  3. I have been living by the housewife rule without realizing it. 🙂
    I always stop to pick things up, dust the dust off a few little things, or tidy a shelf when I have a minute or two. But I have to remember not to overdo it and pick up every small toy before the day is done else I find myself spending the day picking things up repeatedly instead of enjoying myself. 😉
